Thoughts on Money, Investing and Life

One of the biggest pluses you can have when facing a financial problem is having someone on whom you can rely.  In my case, I’ve been incredibly lucky to have my fiancee to help me through my troubles.  Her moral support is one thing that has kept me going through the last troubles that I’ve been having.  I love her more and more with each passing day.

Anyway, enough of the mushy stuff; as is my custom, I’m now going to cover some of the best articles from this week around the blogosphere:

Good Articles This Week

Tips for First Time Credit Card Users – In spite of the fact that we’re currently in a ‘credit crunch’, there are still plenty of credit card offers floating around, particularly those aimed at college students.  Studenomics covers some facts to keep in mind if you are receiving credit card offers and want to find the best one for you.  Although for your first card, you might need to settle for something a bit less than ideal, until you have the chance to show that you aren’t a big credit risk.

Should Someone Receiving Government Aid Give to Charity? My Life ROI covers an interesting ethical conundrum; if you are receiving unemployment payments from the government, should you give part of that compensation to charity?  My view is, as long as you aren’t doing anything illegal, the money should be yours to use as you see fit; as MLR notes, it’s unemployment insurance that your taxes help to provide, after all.

10 Amazing Abandoned Bank Vaults – Knight Hooson of Money Compare shows why Money Compare is becoming my favorite blog for odd money news.  This article provides a list of abandoned bank vaults with interesting histories; my personal favorite is the Hard Rock Vault in London.  It’s kind of amazing how many bank vaults have been abandoned over the decades.

Why Are There Homeless Vets in America? – A damn good question, posed by the Financial Samurai.  I don’t have good explanations myself, other than the politics involved with providing hundreds of thousands of vets with all the financial support they could conceivably need.  Helping them as much as possible is one thing I’d like to see happen in the future.

Report Missing and Stolen Check Cards – I can’t claim to be an expert on debit cards (I’m more of a credit card fan myself), but Green Panda Treehouse shares a near miss with her debit card.  She shares how to put a hold on your debit card and the Federal Trade Commission rules regarding debit card liability.

Where the Amateur Financier Has Been Featured

My article Great Debates: ETFs vs. Index Funds was featured as one of the ten best in the 25th Best of Money Carnival.  I’m so happy; it’s the first time I’ve been selected, although I’ve been submitting for the past several weeks.  Yay for me!

Also, I wrote a guest post for My Life ROI called 6 Ways to Bounce Back From Unemployment, detailing several steps everyone who loses their job should take.  Check it out, and stay tuned for other guest posts from me there.
