Thoughts on Money, Investing and Life

Archives for Super Saver Sunday category

Sometimes, the ideas I get for my Super Saver Sunday cartoons are just plain weird.  Case in point, today’s cartoon.  While taking to bunking in a refrigerator cartoon would certainly cut down on your rent or mortgage, it just doesn’t make good financial sense.  For example, one good rain storm could completely wipe away all the equity you’ve built up, as your cardboard castle melts under the onslaught.

There are more practical ways to save on the cost of rent.  If you are not absolutely in love with your current dwelling, you can always look for something else.  By searching for a place to live in a slightly different neighborhood, you could save a great deal of money on your living expenses; different towns in the same general region can have much different housing markets, and by moving from a more expensive one to a less expensive one, you can save a good deal of money.  Similarly, downgrading your current apartment or house to a smaller one is one possibility for savings.

But what if you absolutely adore where you currently live?  You’ll need to try talking your landlord into cutting down on your rent.  If you are a good tenant, particularly in a bad market for finding renters, you will have much more in your corner when you try to get your rent lowered; a landlord facing a several month vacancy will be willing to compromise with you, compared to one who has a long waiting list for your place.  Otherwise, try to make whatever appeals you can to your landlord to make your dwelling more affordable; the alternative is not a pretty sight:

(Side note: I would hope it would go without saying, but I’m not, repeat, NOT trying to make fun of the homeless.  Just thought I should throw that out there.)

Once again this week, we’re looking into insane ways to save money.  This time, we’re going to show you one possible way to cut down on those energy bills: hamster power!  I like this cartoon in particular because one of the pet names I have for my fiancee is Hamster.  (It’s a term of endearment, I say!)  I think it came out looking pretty cute.

If you want some legitimate ways to cut down how much you spend on your electrical bills, you could switch over to compact flourescent lightbulbs, make sure your house is well insulated, and installing low-flow shower head.  You can find these tips and more on MSN, Not Made of Money, and Associated Content, among many, many others.  For now, enjoy the cartoon:

Another week, another Sunday, another cartoon loaded with ‘good’ financial advice! (Promise of good financial advice in these cartoons not valid anywhere in the known universe.)

This week, I decided to tackle one method of cutting down on your cell phone costs.  After all, if you are a frequent cell phone user, you are probably spending a sizable amount each month in order to keep your cell phone service.  It’s gotten to the point where having a cell phone is considered practically essential to most people’s existence, whether for work, for pleasure, or both.

If you want to save money on your cell phone, there are numerous techniques you can use; go with the network that most of your friends use, cut down on your texting, or consider using a pre-paid cell phone.  If you still find yourself needing to do more in order to save money on your cell phone bills, you could consider some alternative methods of cutting your costs.  Follow the example of my next cartoon, and you’ll find your cell phone bill will practically disappear (although, the same might happen with your friends and business contacts):

Just be sure, if you decide to follow this method, not to skimp on the string; it’s the key to the whole communication network.

As they say, now for something completely different…

You might know from reading some of my previous posts that I dabble in art work.  Lately, though, I haven’t had much opportunity to express my talents, in no small part because this blog occupies such a large part of my time.  (And frankly, there’s still a lot more I could be doing to improve it; but that’s a post for another day…)  In fact, I haven’t really drawn anything all this year, which disappoints me when I made a New Year’s Resolution to improve my artwork.

To rectify this situation, while still keeping up with my blogging duties, I’ve decided to start a regular, weekly comic, to add some amusement to this blog and get in some extra drawing practice.  The theme, as you might guess from this entry’s title, is savings tips.  But not your ordinary savings tips, like getting a credit card with no annual fee or cutting out your daily latte; no, these are tips for the truly dedicated saver, the one for whom the average tips are just the beginning.  The sort of saver who’d move to a nudist colony to save on clothing expenses, for example…

Hopefully, you enjoyed my first attempt at a comic (as well as the first time I attempted to draw a guy, actually) and continue to enjoy the comics I have planned in the future.  Until then, have a good Sunday!

(For those who care about such things: the initial sketch and outline were created in Marcomedia Fireworks 4, while the coloring and fine-tuning of the line art was done in Paint.net.  Initial concept and art are mine.)
