@Mark: I think we will likely see a lot more situations where people end up working much longer, at least in some capacity, to provide further income. On the other hand, I think we'll also see many more situations where people are able, through side work or other 'alternative' income sources, to leave work earlier than they would otherwise be able, and spend of their lifetime relaxing rather than working their rumps off.

@FinEngr: That's less an example of 'mini-retirements' and more an example of buyer's remorse when they've been fired or otherwise had to leave their position. Still, it is amazing how they can come back and make more than they did before.

We've seen a rise in those "mini-retirements" you talk about. They'll leave for a short stint and then return, usually commanding a higher salary (tell me how that one works).

I think that most individuals will never have a full retirement. They will probably always need a part time job to generate some form of income.

@FS: Yup, it seems like the further you get in life, the more you want to take a step back and enjoy yourself, mini-retirement style. I do think that there will be something available for Generation X and Y regarding Social Security; most of the predictions I hear are around 50-75% of expected benefits can be paid out without making any changes (and there are plenty of changes possible, if we get the political willpower to do so). Here's hoping that we can get our act together before things get too bad.

As we age, mini-retirements get better and better.

I look forward to the government revamping SSecurity and getting the Gen Y and Gen X members SOMETHING, rather than current expectations of nothing.
