@Gordon: Yes, it is a shame; hopefully, all the scammers get brought to justice and their victims are appropriately compensated (preferably from the scammers' pockets). That would be justice, after all.

I like what I'm reading. It's sad that scammers ruin it for everyone else.

@FS: Yes, Craigslist apparently has more than its fair share of scammers; the caution page on Craigslist was the second result I got when I searched for 'avoiding scams'.

Adsense does make me a bit nervous as well; not only for the penny stock ads (which I see much more often than I would like), but because I also tend to get ads in foreign languages (mostly French, I think). Google could be putting links to the mafia on my page, and I'd never know since I can't read them. If any of my other ads generated any income, I'd just scrap Adsense altogether.

YEah, Craigslist... scammer heaven! Beware!

My other fear is contextual ads like Adsense.... most are fine, but what about those "1000% Penny STock" ads, and other stuff I have no idea? I donno... so i don't put it up, not to say others shouldn't either. Just don't feel comfortable.

Indeed, Craigslist is one particular place where wiring people money under false pretenses seems to be a major concern; when I was doing research for this blog entry, it had a page about avoiding scams, and that was a major one (second only to to dealing with people you can meet in person). Sorry to hear that the Olympics are being targeted by scammers; although, given the audacity of scammers when it comes to other targets, I suppose I shouldn't be surprised. Hopefully, by warning people as often and as loudly as we can, we can cut down the number of people who fall for such things in the future.

One place to avoid the wiring scams is with Craigslist.. OR if you buy Olympic tickets online on a non-Vancouver Olympics website.

Someone lost out on $5000 worth of Opening Ceremonies tickets buying his tickets online from what seemed a reputable dealer online =(
