Mr. Credit Card (if that is your *real* name ;-) raises some great points. I think a big part of retirement planning revolves around a question that few people talk about - what kind of retirement do you want?

I think the dream for a lot of people is to trade in the office attire for golf course attire, or something similar. A lot of people view retirement as an extended vacation, but I think boredom because a real problem at some point for retirees.

This affects how much you'll need to save because if you plan on working part time - even if it;s just for something to do - you'll need a little less savings than if you're only spending money...

Okay... thanks.
I haven't met too many people that think about it this way. I, and many of my colleagues are working towards building a business up to a point where it can either be inherited or run with managers requiring minimal supervision. I think having retirement savings are extremely important, but a continuous stream of income above and beyond investment income and social security couldn't hurt.

Cheers,

This brings up a very good point that I never even considered when planning for retirement. Even if I do save what I am able to save, will I have enough to actually retire and live on? People look forward to the day when they don't have to work and it's fun in the sun, but that reality is not attainable by most.

Finding a job or side income that you enjoy though combined with whatever was saved makes a lot more sense. Thanks for this!
